WHAT TO WEAR FOR AND GET READY FOR YOUR PHOTO SESSION
At Lake Rock Studio, we believe that coordination and accessorizing are key to creating stunning photographs. In addition to providing expert photography services, we also offer a wardrobe for our clients to make use of. Here are our top tips to help you and your group look your best on camera:
Tip #1: Coordinate—but don’t be matchy/matchy. When shooting with another person, make sure your outfits complement one another. Choose a consistent color palette but avoid dressing in the same color. If someone is wearing a bold pattern, dress the rest of the group in more solids, but make sure each outfit carries one or more colors from the “star” outfit for consistency.
Tip #2: Accessorize! Scarves, hats, bows, bands… all of these add a fun twist to an otherwise “standard” look. Accessories are also a great way to coordinate looks. For example, if Mom is wearing a bright pattern with lavender, pink and gray, little brother can rock a pair of gray sneakers while Dad can choose a lavender vest and big sis/cousin with a pink headband.
Tip #3: Try for Texture. Layers and textures can add depth to your photos. Look for clothes and accessories with rich, simple detailing such as embroidery, tweed, ribbons, etc. or layer pieces to add dimension and texture. Texture is especially important if you want a lot of black and white shots, which naturally need more visual depth and detail than color images.
Tip #4: Dress Kids for Comfort & Movement. Kids naturally run, skip, dance and jump around during photo sessions. To avoid unnecessary aggravation, let them be comfortable in the clothes and opt for apparel that accentuates their natural energy. Skirts, fedoras, scarves, and knit sweaters allow for natural movement, so when the kids start getting wild, their clothes will look even better.
Tip #5: Be Timeless. At Lake Rock Studio, we know that you’ll have these pictures for generations. Choose classic, timeless pieces, or even vintage apparel and accessories. Avoid the latest trends and you may feel otherwise about that amazing outfit in a few years (or even a few months) from now.
By following these tips and working with the team at Lake Rock Studio, you can be sure that your photographs will be beautiful, timeless, and something you’ll treasure for years to come.
For Women
For women, our main suggestion is to bring a variety of solid-colored outfits in different textures and styles. Form-fitting clothing is always a great choice as it helps to accentuate your figure and creates a sleek and sophisticated look. Avoid patterns as they can be distracting in photographs. Instead, opt for textures like lace, ruffles, sequins, and ruching to add visual interest. Bring a pop of color that brings out your eyes, and a variety of necklines to mix up your looks. Express yourself with a glamorous dress or an unusual outfit that makes you feel confident and happy. You can also make use of our wardrobe at Lake Rock Studio for your photoshoot.
For undergarments, we recommend bringing a basic black and nude bra, a strapless bra, and a bustier if you have them. Bring a spaghetti strap, T-shirt and/or a tank top in basic white and basic black, and solid color leggings if you have them, in case we work with some tulle skirts, but it’s not necessary. Bring a few outfits, 2-3 is a good number, that represents your style, and that make you feel comfortable and confident.
For Men
As for men, a strong business look is always a great choice for a photoshoot. Bring a variety of dress shirts, ties, and jackets. Avoid busy print patterned shirts, as the focus should be on your face and not the outfit. A casual business look can also be achieved with a jacket and open dress shirt, or a dress shirt on its own. Polo shirts are also a good option if they are in good condition and fit well. For a no-jacket casual look, bring colored shirts – ideally darker than your skin tone. You can also make use of our wardrobe at Lake Rock Studio for your photoshoot.
Remember, the most important thing is to feel comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing. At Lake Rock Studio, we’re here to help you look and feel your best, so don’t hesitate to ask us for advice.
